PUNK 57: BOOK REVIEW
"Life is fifty wrong turns down a bumpy road. All you can hope is that you end up somewhere nice."
Book title: Punk 57
Author: Penelope DouglasGenre: Romance, New Adult Fiction
Overall rating: 5/5
I first want to start with the fact that this book is incredibly misunderstood. Yes at the beginning the characters are really shitty and they do horrible actions.
But I think the thing a lot of people miss out on is the character development. Ryen pretty early on you can see she is not her persona that she puts on, she is a little girl who was lonely.
Misha is a little more difficult, I found it hard to justify a lot of his actions. I think the author could of done better at explaining this. But in the end he’s a rigid guy who has had to learn to stand up for himself.
I do have to say the people that think this is a “dark romance” clearly have not read as many wattpad books as I have. This is the typical evil harry styles enemies to lovers book and I love that. It’s nostalgic.
This story really did intrigue me once I reached about 40% and I really fell in love with it. The characters did change their actions and owed up to the people who deserved it. I also love the way this story was written, it’s a really good pace and spicy romance for me personally. Also this is the type of spice I need in every romance book.
Overall, I think a lot of the people that dislike it need to read it all the way through. If you were someone who DNF’d this, this is your sign to reread it fully!!
Punk 57 was a very light read for me. I have been reading fantasy trilogies and duologies for like two months now. After reading all those heavy books, reading this book felt breezy.
One thing I really loved about this book was the character growth of Ryen, the Female lead. She wasn't the ordinary protagonist: righteous, kind, the one who stands out. Her character was utterly despicable. She was the type of the person who would do anything to blend in, to be praised, to stay in the popular circle. And the best part about it was how she absolutely loathed who she pretended to be. Nobody knew the real her, the one who wasn't as bitchy, as mean.
Nobody....except Misha.
Her best friend and Pen-pal who she has been communicating through letters for the past seven years and who she has never seen before.
When Misha rolls into the same school as Ryen, he is astounded to see how Ryen actually was in real life. She wasn't the same girl who recommended him Eminem songs, who loved veggie pizza over meat, who always knew the right thing to say to him when he was distressed. Or maybe she was the same girl, just coated in layers so that she can hide herself.
And that's not all. There is a dark side to Misha's side of the story too. It's a spoiler so I can't say it here. But I totally recommend this as an intense, stand alone book.
